The PMP Eligibility Criteria 4,500 hours of Project Management experience for people with Bachelor's degree and 7,500 hours for people with High School Diploma. All applicants must also have 35 contact hours of formal Project Management experience.

The Eligibility Criteria to Becoming a PMP varies depending on one’s level of education:

In case the person has a Bachelor Degree (or equivalent/greater), then that person has to have accumulated at least 4,500 hours of Project Management experience in at least a 3 year period. The person also should have at least 35 contact hours of formal Project Management education.

In case the person has a High School Diploma (or equivalent), then that person has to have accumulated at least 7,500 hours of Project Management experience in at least a 3 year period. The person also should have at least 35 contact hours of formal Project Management experience.

The PMP handbook does not mention anything about the PMP path for someone who hasn’t finished High School (or its equivalent). People in this situation should consider contacting PMI or their local PMI chapter prior to submitting their application.

You can gather 35 contact hours by completing a Project Management course at a university, taking a Project Management training in-house, or taking a distance learning PM course.

Before you can apply for the PMP exam, you need to have gathered 35 contact hours of formal education.

The are several ways to get 35 contact hours for your PMP application, including:

Taking a Project Management course at a university/college. For example, if a Project Management course is 12 weeks long, with 3 hours every week, then this will give you 12 x 3 = 36 contact hours.

Taking a Project Management training session either with an R.E.P. (Registered Education Provider) or at a company sponsored program.

Taking a distance learning Project Management course.

Note that you are not restricted to a specific time-frame previous to your PMP application for the collection of the 35 contact hours. For example, if you took a Project Management course 10 years ago, the hours you’ve earned are still eligible and claimable in your PMP application.

Also note that any contact hours you submit in your application must relate to a course work that is already done (eg. finished, completed). For example, if you’re still undergoing a training in Project Management in house, and you’ve already accrued the required 35 contact hours in this training, but this training is not yet over, then you cannot claim the contact hours in your PMP application.
